“The Selchie legend”

“The Selchie legend”
This is a legend about a selchie. In Scotland, people believe that selchie is a magic creature that when living in the water it is a seal, and when living on land it is a human.

A long time ago, in a village near the sea, lived a fisherman and his wife. They wished for a child. One day, the man was fixing his fishing nets. Suddenly, he saw a beautiful baby seal near the rocks. He looked around for the seal’s mother, but there was nothing. Then, the fisherman took the baby seal and wrapped it with his shirt.
His wife saw him with no shirt on and carrying a package.
“What do you have in your arms?” , she asked. “Nothing”, he said. “It’s only a selchie”
She opened the package and saw a baby with grey eyes. She screamed with joy and happiness.
“It`s not a selchie! It’s a baby boy” she said.
They decided to keep the baby and named him Greyling. Being a selchie, they never allowed him to go near the sea. Greyling grew up with a special feeling in his heart because of the sea.
One horrible stormy day, the fisherman was drowning in the sea. Suddenly, Greyling saw his father and jumped into the water. Then, mysteriously the wife saw a seal pushing the fisherman to safety.
She ran to kiss her husband and they felt happy and sad at the same time.
